Toyo, who had a reputation for miserliness, has died. His three surviving siblings, Kazuo, Jiro and Rina, did not mourn his death, but inwardly wanted to jump for joy. Toyo did not show a gentle face toward them, even though they were his relatives. However, perhaps because he had realized his own mortality, or perhaps because he remembered his feelings as a father, he left his legacy to his siblings. The brothers were contacted by Takeya, a lawyer who had been entrusted with the administration of the estate, to discuss the distribution of the inheritance. Kazuo was on his way to the villa by bus with his wife Aiko. He held Aiko until the transfer. When he finally reached the destination, he heard a happy voice from behind the grass. When he looked, the man, who was teased by his brothers since childhood in the village, peeked out. Kazuo is surprised when he chases away Asaoki, who imitates Aiko's gasps. He did not know that Asaoki had been taking care of Toyo in place of his brothers, who stopped coming to him after a quarrel over money, and that he had therefore written in his will that he would get part of his inheritance. When Asao wondered why he was being asked to share the inheritance, Takeya said he was going to share the money for taking care of Toyo, but the brothers were sarcastic and wondered about his share, even though they had not seen each other in all the time they had lived. They are all black-hearted and have no money, so they want to keep as much of the inheritance for themselves as possible. Takeya tells them that they have been told that half of the inheritance will be given to whoever finds a family keepsake somewhere in the house, and the other half to Asao..
