On a humid summer night, Ben Foster, a young black man from an educated middle-class family, and his friend Montrell drive through the quiet streets of Charleston. Months prior to relocating to the historic city, Ben's older brother was unintentionally shot and killed by a D.C. police officer. Unwilling to accept his brother's death as accidental, Ben contemplates retaliation against local law enforcement. His intentions are diverted when Dylann Roof, a white supremacist, massacres nine black church members during a bible study meeting just blocks away. Two days later, at the bond hearing, the victims' family members shock the nation and Ben as they face the killer and offer unconditional grace and forgiveness. As the events in Charleston collide with Ben's unresolved emotions over the loss of his brother, those closest to Ben sense him slipping further into darkness. Ben finally comes to terms with his feelings of racial animosity and is able to find peace in the power of forgiveness and unity after he recognizes that he has become the very image of the one he despises the most.
