Holland Roberts, an ex-FBI profiler with the Department of Behavioral Science Unit but left after a tragic event of his wife while in the field, now resides in Tampa, Florida, as a down and out private investigator. Holland has a neighbor, teenager Tessa Sloan, who seems to be always by herself, as her mother seems to work all the time. Holland takes upon himself to watch out for the girl. One evening, walking back from the store, Holland notices a van outside, as two men run back into the van, with Tessa, who is being forced inside. Holland drops his bags and runs towards the van, taking out his gun she always has on his person, but it is too late, as the van takes off, but not until Holland reads the license plate numbers. Holland calls the police, and they head next door to start their investigation, but when they do, the police, along with Holland, discover that the place is empty and that there is no record of anyone living there or that go by a Margert (the mother) and Tessa Sloan. The plate number from the van also comes back inconclusive. Given the way he left the FBI and her troubled past, especially now with heavy drinking, a local detective, Karen Davies, tells him to get some help and next time will arrest her for a false report. Holland heads over the following evening when the excitement has ended and investigates and finds something that crushes him; a hidden symbol that relates back to a sex cult he was part of taking down, the night he lost his wife. Could this be a coincidence or something much more going on. Holland will enlist the help of several friends that he served with in the FBI and Karen Davies, who will come to believe what he is telling her. Now to find Tessa and take down the people responsible for his wife's death, however, to do this, Holland must dive deep into the depths of the underworld and places he never knew existed but how far will he go, and will he ever get back?
