In 1953, a young actor / writer in Hollywood was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and asked the question: 'Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party? He refused to answer. Nedrick Young was not the first nor the last, nor the most famous to oppose this committee. But his story helps us better understand this dark time in American History and to recognize the signs of resurgence today. Nedrick Young wrote The Defiant One and won an academy award for it... but he was writing using a pseudonym! That film and the award helped break the Hollywood Blacklist.
