The movie is based on the eponymous novella by Leo Tolstoy (1856) and portrays father and son Turbins some 20 years apart. The father is rude and quick-tempered but helps out a friend who loses all of his money playing with a card-sharper. The son is calculating and takes advantage of his host in playing cards. Are the father and son alike in matters of the heart?
