On February 20, 2004, gay and lesbian couples lined up to apply for marriage licenses at the Sandoval County Courthouse in Bernalillo, New Mexico . The first license was granted at 8:10 a.m. By 4:30 p.m. that same day the door to equality slammed shut once again, after an opinion was faxed to the County Clerk from Patricia Madrid, then Secretary of State for New Mexico. But, not before 64 gay and lesbian New Mexican couples registered their marriage licenses.
