There is a scene in which it is inferred that the European plantation owner has forced himself upon a female labourer. She looks upset and it had earlier been suggested that the owner had an interest in 'fresh meat' in general and her in particular. No detail of an assault is shown on screen.

There are intense and often brutal depictions of violence, as slaves are mercilessly whipped, beaten, and hit by plantation owners.

In one of the film's strongest scenes, a slave is caught attempting to escape from the plantation; he is then taken into a room were he is tied onto the a wooden plank before having his Achilles tendon severed using a pair of bolt cutters. The cutting itself takes place below screen however a small squirt of blood is shown squirting onto a mans face as he screams in agony; this scene is very intense and disturbing in nature

A mark is shown on the cheek of a young man's face following a beating

There are uses of mild to moderate language, this includes the use of the term 'whore'. In one scene, a mother having discovered that her unmarried daughter is pregnant, calls the young woman a 'wretched whore' before proceeding to punch and kick her. In addition to this there are some mild profanities which include subtitled uses of 'arse', 'bastard', 'bloody', 'crap', 'damn', 'Jesus Christ' and 'screwed'.
