A lot of the film is centered around the main character's past with her alcoholic father. He seems to be a depressive who can't live without drinking. When he is sick he calls for his daughter to get him a bottle of liquor. Her mother later gets angry at her for this.

Helen's mother attempts to commit suicide by drowning in a lake. When her daughter calls for her, it is almost as if she can't hear her. Her daughter follows her into the lake and it is not until Helen taps her that she is able to come back to reality and not continue to attempt suicide.

The scene where a little girl sees her father get angry at work is upsetting.

In the end of the film at the premiere, P.L. Travers breaks down crying when she sees George Banks' redemption. Although it's depicted dramatically, it actually reveals a powerful personal significance for her.
