Flamenco Between Fences surrounds the story of inmates at a maximum security prison in Madrid. Here, there are a number of Gitanos (Spanish Gypsies) who have recently been allowed to practice their traditional dance of Flamenco once a week in a new rehabilitation program. Many of the Gitano prisoners are married (the prison houses both men and women) who are only able to see each other once a week during these sessions. Amnon Ron and Tristan Copley Smith have spent weeks in Madrid interviewing and capturing, intimate, unique moments, exploring the paradox of a nomadic culture, trapped behind walls. The film explores Gitano culture, their struggle in modern society, and their unique connection with the flamenco.
