In 2005, at age 25, Andy Springer began serving a sentence in an Indiana state prison as punishment for a series of D.U.I. violations. While incarcerated, Andy developed an acute pain in his back. Fearing this was the return of a rare form of spinal cancer he had successfully fought in the year 2000, Andy immediately sought medical help from the prison. Those in charge ignored his pleas for 17 months. During that time Andy lost the use of his legs - a direct result of the cancerous tumors attacking his spine. Eventually acknowledging their mistake, the prison released Andy. He is now living with terminal cancer and is permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
