Alice Barma heads a team of detectives at the Paris Police Headquarters. But she's a broken woman, desperately fighting alcoholism. When Captain Montigny assigns Carmen Boussier, the daughter of the Public Prosecutor, to her team, Alice is furious and makes no secret of her hostility. But Carmen is a fighter and gradually establishes herself on the team: it's she who notices the particular technique used to tie up the victim's wrists; and it's she who digs up an old, unsolved case in which the same methods were employed; but it's also she who is the cause of a major blunder - A climate of suspicion and denunciation takes hold at Police HQ. And as the case progresses, it transpires that Carmen's father and Montigny's husband are somehow involved. That's when Louis Cohen, Barma's former partner, is murdered. Alice starts drinking again; booze, which already destroyed her family and caused her to lose custody of her son, puts her life in danger once again. Will Carmen's be able to help her avoid the worst?
