Around the middle of the film a man is shown with blood in his clothes. The scene includes a close up of a gruesome injury in his back. It's shown briefly, but with some detail.
There are some scenes of semi-mild child abuse in the first twenty minutes of the film. The main character's childhood is a bleak one, characterized by sadness and little love.
A boy is shown carrying a sword, very likely real, and searching for a young girl and taunting her, asking, "Where are you, rat?" He finds her, and hits her across the face with a book, which causes her to hit her head against the wood frame of the bay window she is hiding in. She then attacks him, tackles him to the ground, and beats him repeatedly until a servant comes and pries her off of him. The scene can be interpreted somewhat comically as a young girl, about 9 or 10, is beating a teenage boy. However, the scene is meant to be taken seriously.
Another girl at Lowood School is brutally caned on her back in public humiliation.
