The girls' Aunt is depicted drinking what appears to be alcohol and Jin is shown stacking up empty bottles for her Aunt. At one point, the Aunt is passed out and the girls are unable to wake her up. All of the references are vague, but it seems to be the reason the Aunt is selfish and seems unconcerned with the girls' well-being at times.

Some may find it disturbing that a boy impales live grasshoppers on a stick a roasts them--and then hands them to another child to eat (which she does).
