Despite the known violence, Escobar gained popularity and even protection among the local people, as he frequently distributed money to the poor through housing projects and other civic activities. He worked hard to cultivate a Robin Hood image and was responsible for the construction of many hospitals, schools, churches and even soccer fields for those less fortunate. These two faces of Pablo existed together. But how did he get to be so powerful? Therein lies the little known reason; support from an unnamed player. The kind of player that can offer the kind of money and power that would elevate Escobar to the heights he achieved. The support worked behind the scenes and Escobar actually thought he was the puppet master. He believed he could accomplish his dream of being the leader Colombia needed. But he realized, too late, that he was actually the puppet.
