The overall mood of the film is intense, depressing and bitter as it depicts a heroic, desperate, uneven and hopeless fight for freedom against an opressing superpower.
Extreme violence, a lot of blood and horrific injuries are shown (see violence section).
The female protagonist is kept in jail, she's interrogated and there's a veiled threat of torture in the air thoughout. Bruises on her face imply that she's been beaten up and possibly tortured. The acting done by the actor playing the secret police chief is very convincing and threatening.
Two officers of the AVH (the communist secret terror-police) are hung from a tree upside-down by their ankles; a sign next to them claims that this will happen to all members of the secret police. Slightly horroristic.
