We see Oskar's mother looking out the window from her office complex to see the World Trade Center in flames, as she is on the phone with Thomas, who is inside the towers. At home, Oskar watches the first tower collapse on TV. We see in an odd sort of way, Thomas falling from the towers to his death.
Oskar keeps printed pictures of the 9/11 "jumpers," and wonders if one of them is his father. Oskar takes it all out on himself, pinching himself brutally. We briefly see his torso covered in pinch marks, some of them drawing blood. He gets into a heated argument with his mother, and lashes out at inanimate objects sometimes. Because of his sensitive mind and his harrowing experience, everyday things: planes flying a little too low, trains, bridges, etc. carry a sense of menace that's vividly conveyed to moviegoers.
