Men are killed by guns, spears, and bows throughout the film.
After raping the native girls at the lake, the Portuguese captain and others kill most of them with knives and guns. Some deaths are shown in real time, but the camera just avoids the wounds as they are inflicted. The bloody bodies of the dead are thrown into the lake and later retrieved, treated, and mourned over by their community.
Blood: The film opens with a shot of a native girl waking up and discovering blood on her clothes indicating her first period.
Near the beginning of the film and shortly after the lake scene, two animals are killed. At the beginning, a wild boar, hunted with a gun. Later, someone hits a horse on the head. Each of these animals is then seen in close-up, lying on the ground, with a bloodstain on its head. However, the end credits clarify that no animals were harmed in the making of the film.
