While developing the script for Cast Away (2000), screenwriter William Broyles Jr. consulted survivalist experts who tested his own abilities while trying to endure and combat hunger, find shelter and food, and basically strive with the minimum of resources available. Broyles took the challenge in order to create an accurate portrayal of how to survive on a desert island, just like Tom Hanks character does in the movie.
