In 1964 the young Turk, Ahmet, left the train just before the Portuguese, A. Rodrigues. In response to the question asked by the reception committee as to whether he was a foreign worker, Ahmet replied politely with "me hairdresser", as deemed from his foreign dictionary. The Portuguese said nothing and grinned. Merely by fate, A. Rodrigues happened to be the millionth foreign worker, encircled by news cameras and awarded a motorbike. Since this event, Mr Rodrigues has become a symbol of the "foreign worker" in Germany, whereas the hairdresser, Ahmet, counts as only one among the many moustached citizens of the republic.
