Some drinking and smoking, and a fair amount of drug use and references. We see a woman in bad shape after being drunk and dying from AIDS due to careless use of needles for drugs.

A lot of emotional and intense scenes involving the rough lives of Liz Murray and her friends and relatives. She is also shown lying on her mother's coffin before it's buried. The movie has an uplifting ending, but is still intense and basically on a PG-13 level.
