There is some kissing (including a kiss between two men, and a scene where a boy and girl make out). There is also a scene where a man masturbates and a photograph of two people having sex is shown. One man also asks for sex from his wife a few times, calling it "cherry pie".

There are some fights shown but nothing very graphic.

Lots of people swear including the f-word.

There is some smoking and alcohol use as well as two characters using marijuana.

The main character tries to kill herself several times. Some of these scenes are more intense and serious than others. She tries to hang herself (doesn't work), tries to overdose on vitamin pills and then tries to cut her wrist with a plastic fork before cutting her wrist with glass.

The teenage girl also gets hit in the stomach which apparently causes a miscarriage (blood is shown on her underwear).

Most of the story takes place in jail where the father is a murderer and there are a lot of scenes of prison guards and prisoners shown.
