A factory worker steals a large sum of money and commits murder. In the dock, he succeeds in shifting the blame to his friend. The innocent turner is sentenced to a long term of imprisonment. His wife is a mistress of the criminal who deserts her soon after. He for his part becomes a wealthy merchant thanks to the stolen money... The prisoner's daughter studies at the Art Academy. Every day she notices a poor woman in front of the Academy. The girl does not suspect that this is her mother who wants to look at her child from a distance...
