Menstruation (the term "period" was used in the film) is mentioned when Johnny is describing a red panty for having "periods", much to Melanie's disgust. This is played for laughs.

A yubistume (finger shortening), a Japanese ritual for cutting their own fingers as a punishment, is mentioned and depicted. There is a scene where a Japanese gang member cuts his fingers three times in different periods but all of the scenes only show the feeling of pain.
