A staunch devotee of Lord Ranganatha, Vipranarayana, lives with his disciple, Rangaraju, in an ashram on the banks of Cauvery river at Srirangam. A devadasi, Devadevi, passing through the way couldn't tolerate Vipranarayana not even glancing at her. She vows to entice him with her charm and approaches him with a sorrowful story. He believes her and eventually surrenders to her charm. She avoids him as soon as her ego is satisfied and leaves home. He follows her and is dismissed by Devadevi's mother. Lord Ranganatha is worried for Vipranarayana, assumes the form of Rangaraju and hands over a golden vessel to Devadevi's mother as a gift from Vipranarayana. The vessel is found to be stolen from a temple and the Chola King orders to severe the hands of Vipranarayana as a punishment. Lord Ranganatha appears and reveals that Vipranarayana is Vyjayanathi, the garland that adorns him, and Devadevi is a gandharva kanya. Vipranarayana assumes his real form and adorns the lord.
