The beginning scene you might say is gory. Many men are shot and killed especially since it takes place during the Battle of the Wilderness during the Civil War. A man is stabbed in the chest with a bayonet, and while trying to pull it out is shot, a part of a mans guts are hanging out, throughout the film are screams of agony from wounded men. The ending scene is also a bit gory, men's lifeless body are shown.

There is only Casual pipe smoking at the beginning of the film, and assumed tobacco chewing at the end.

The beginning of the Battle of the Wilderness is very intense and up-close. Another Intense and possibly frightening scene is at the end of the film. There is a fight between the group of soldiers, and at the end of the movie the solders lifeless body are shown for a time on the screen.
