Married with two young children, John Lewis is a financially struggling full-time librarian and part-time theater critic for the local newspaper in Aberdarcy, Wales. He, however, can't focus on his wife Jean Lewis, their children, or work as his mind constantly wanders to others of the opposite sex, especially as one lovely young thing after another enters his view. Actually acting on those thoughts of being with other women doesn't occur until wealthy Elizabeth Gruffydd-Williams - Mrs. - enters the library, she seemingly open to an affair with him. Her fixation on him extends to a promotion for him, the position which he has thus far placed little effort, which his best friend and colleague, milquetoast Ieuan Jenkins, is working hard behinds the scenes to secure himself, and which she implies can be had for John with one word by her prominent husband, councilor Vernon Williams. Entering into that possible affair with Liz is regardless of John's animosity toward local playwright Gareth Probert, a former suitor of Jean's who seems to be waiting in the wings in an opportunity to get her back from him. The question then becomes what will happen with this foursome, especially as John and Jean, deep in their hearts, arguably still love each other despite their situation.
