Traces the history of the development of the camera and photography from the primitive efforts of Da Vinci through the pioneer work of Louis-Jacques Daguerre and Matthew Brady, to the moderns such as Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstadt, Arthur 'Weegee' Fellig and Edward Weston. The second half of the film is devoted to the life and work of Weston.
