One of the characters is a "half man/half woman" -- a popular "human oddity" of the time in which a person would use exercise, clothing, cosmetics, etc. to appear to be male on one side of the body and female on the other.

A woman attempts to poison a man repeatedly.

Some characters get drunk, and a man smokes a cigar.

The freaks are deformed. However, it should be understood that the entire point of the film is that they are possibly better people than those who are "normal", and that as freakish as they may look, they are not freaks.

The ending can be considered frightening and intense (see violence and gore) and is aimed at rattling viewers.
