The Black, leader of a band of wild mares, is a magnificent creature, powerful, fleet of foot and untamed. Never has he felt the hand of man nor the weight of a saddle. His leadership he maintains by fighting off every stallion who would usurp his throne. His only unconquered enemy is The White, whom he finally drives off. Down in the valley lies the Fielding Ranch. Fielding, an invalid, leaves the operation of his property to a villainous foreman, who has involved his employer's son in a cattle stealing escapade. The boy's sister, Mary, suspects, but her attempts to assist her brother are petulantly repulsed by the boy. Billy Blair, a cowpuncher who loves Mary is determined to win the honor of capturing the beautiful wild horse. Day after day he pursues the Black, up mountains. over dangerous trails, through maze of caverns, until at last he escapes by leaping a gap too wide for any other horses. But on another day, the Black plunges headlong into a forest fire -- the greatest terror a horse can know. Then comes the cowboy and, at the risk of his own life, leads The Black to safety. The wild horse now turns all his loyalty and allegiance to the man who has saved his life, and he is instrumental in uncovering the cattle stealing plot and bringing the foreman to justice, to say nothing of playing a part in uniting Billy and Mary.
