Wife of an ambitious railroad telegrapher, Kitty Manning, finds life in her husband's remote flag station lonely. The boredom is relieved by the birth of their child, but when the infant dies, she leaves Jim to join a comic opera troupe. Kitty's success in New York attracts the attention of Stephen Morton, the owner of Jim's railroad, and he tries to woo the wandering wife with money and jewels. On her way to meet Stephen in San Francisco, Kitty's car breaks down, and she is forced to spend the night inside a little station closely resembling the one she and Jim operated. The happiness of the operator and his wife effects a change in Kitty, and when the man becomes ill, she offers to assume temporary control of the station. During a storm, lightning destroys a nearby trestle, and Kitty, realizing that the next train will be wrecked, jumps on a railroad cycle to warn the approaching express. Witnessing her joy at seeing her husband on Stephen's private train, the railroad owner shows no sign of recognizing Kitty but introduces Jim as the new division superintendent.
