Jack "Mile-a-Minute" Kendall, a young ne'er-do-well who likes to live recklessly and entertain chorus girls, falls in love with beautiful but unscrupulous fortune-hunter Rosalynde d'Aubre. Intending to marry Rosalynde, he takes her to a country inn with his father and Philip Lund, who is aware of the woman's character, in close pursuit. Mr. Kendall offers Rosalynde a $5,000 bribe to withdraw quietly, after which Jack suffers a collapse. The inn is run by cantankerous miser Jack Evans and his daughter Joan, one of Jack's childhood friends. Encouraged by Joan's faith in him and influenced by her gentle manner, Jack invents a new form of motor engine and soon earns a fortune. Jack's parents, finally proud of their son, happily accept Joan into the family.
