As a child during the German occupation, Elise (Brigitte Kolerus) watched the resistance movement liquidating her Nazi father. She is now married to an introverted priest (Ole Ishøy) and works as an actress herself. This artistic work is not welcomed by the parish's pious circles, who are already intriguing towards the priest. Elise's traumatic childhood experience still affects her deeply, and when she meets one of her father's assassins, the former priest Jens Glud (Ove Rud), who is now a theater critic, it leads to a mental breakdown. She plays the title role in Henrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler", and when she has to shoot herself at the end of the play, the gun is sharp.
