The opening black and white sequence is rather dark and ominous compared to the light-hearted theme of the remainder of the film. In it, a young girl is shown playing in the forest. She comes upon a woodshed where an axe is buried in a stump. She hears spooky noises from inside the shed, then cautiously she opens the door. Nothing is ever revealed.

This scene is referenced throughout the film as "something nasty in the woodshed," but for comic effect.
