Gotham City. Crime boss Carl Grissom (Jack Palance) effectively runs the town but there's a new crime fighter in town - Batman (Michael Keaton). Grissom's right-hand man is Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson), a brutal man who is not entirely sane... After falling out between the two Grissom has Napier set up with the Police and Napier falls to his apparent death in a vat of chemicals. However, he soon reappears as The Joker and starts a reign of terror in Gotham City. Meanwhile, reporter Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) is in the city to do an article on Batman. She soon starts a relationship with Batman's everyday persona, billionaire Bruce Wayne.

At one point, the Joker strangles a charred corpse of the man he has just killed and says, "I'm glad you're dead!"

While battling the Joker's henchman in a cathedral, Batman battles one henchman and is smashed through wooden structures until he gains the upper hand by throwing the henchman down the stairway to his presumed death.

Moderate, stylised violence overall.

Joker shot at Batman the bullet flies back and in the face of the joker blood splatters out. After that for a time it's very Hard to Look at him

An acrobat with knives attached to his boots tries to stab Batman but Batman tazes him in the crotch and knocks him unconscious.

Batman uses martial arts techniques in numerous fight scenes throughout the film.

Many people are shot dead during the film.

A man's face is bloodied and burned after a ruptured pipe spews chemicals onto it.

There is a brief closeup shot of blood-stained surgical implements.

At one point the Joker shoots someone.

The Joker electrocutes a man and there are several shots of his charred and blackened corpse.

The Joker stabs somebody in the throat with a quill pen.

The Joker carries a pistol and uses it many times throughout the film.

Many people are killed throughout the film using the Joker's lethal laughing gas, which leaves a grotesque grin on their face. This includes a mass gassing attempt on the street with giant balloons filled with the gas, but Batman manages to remove them from the area with his Batwing.

One of the Joker's men attacks Batman using twin swords. Another one attempts to do a flying kick into Batman after activating retractable blades that extend from the bottom of his boots. Another of the Joker's men attacks Batman with a heavy chain.

A factory full of the Joker's henchmen is blown up, and the occupants are presumably killed in the blast.

The Joker shoots down the Batwing, and when Batman emerges from the flaming wreckage his face has several bloody gashes on it. These injuries can clearly be seen on his face for the remaining duration of the film.

Batman knocks out one of the Joker's thugs by hitting him in the crotch with a telescopic melee weapon that extends from his glove.

At the end of the film Batman brutally beats up the Joker. He punches him repeatedly and at one point smashes his head through a wall. The Joker's face is bloodied and bruised from this, and he is seen spitting mouthfuls of blood onto the floor.
