The movie is a mostly lighthearted adaptation of John Gardner's bleak novel, which is from the monster's POV. Grendel is treated as a sympathetic anti-hero. Despite this, the film still has plenty of heavy themes such as loneliness, the futility of war, and the manipulation of religion.

Putting aside the soft cartoony visuals, there's plenty of violence and a sorrow mood throughout the film.
