In 1917, in the red light district Storyville, New Orleans, the prostitute Hattie lives with her twelve year-old daughter Violet in the fancy brothel of Madame Nell, where she works. Photographer Ernest J. Bellocq has an attraction to Hallie and Violet and he is an habitué of the whorehouse. One day, Madame Nell auctions Violet's virginity and the winner pays the fortune of US$ 400 to spend the night with the girl. Then Hattie marries a wealthy client and moves to Saint Louis, leaving Violet in the brothel alone. Violet decides to marry Bellocq and she moves to his house. Until the day that Hattie, who has overcome her past, comes to Bellocq's house with the intention to take Violet with her.

Violet and the photographer (Bellocq) are standing outside the open bathroom door whilst Hattie (Violet's mother) bathes (her left breast and nipple plus her bare buttocks are briefly seen). She sits down onto the edge of the cast iron bath tub.

After being auctioned off as a virgin the 10 year old main character is seen with the winning man she asks him to be gentle and after it cuts away we see two little girls outside to Room listening to her screams, women come in to see if she is ok shortly after he leaves and she is seen with tears down her face and smudged lipstick it's also implied it's too painful in certain areas to move but she laughs regardless.

Before being auctioned off, the 10 year old main character is going over what she must do with older prostitutes, they tell her to scream at first but then pretend to enjoy it, another young girl suggests to touch him "down there" during the auction lots of disgusting comments are made about the child and we see a crowd of very old men and middle aged men bidding.

The main character is not only a minor in the movie but also in real life and yet she is seen fully naked at multiple points, private parts, behind and chest all exposed in some scenes. She also has lots of implied sex with far older men and real onscreen kisses and touching with them.

The main character is Violet, a 12 year old child prostitute played by Brooke Shields.

After implied sex with a grown man, Violet is seen lying face down on a bed, with her dress only covering her lower half (her nipple is seen briefly during commotion after waking up).

A man and woman walk in on Violet as she bathes (her flat chest and nipples are seen). She stands up, turns to face them, and covers herself with a towel, but the woman takes it away (full screen version only - when she stands, her bare genitals are briefly seen, including her bare buttocks).

Violet is seen lying naked on a daybed to be photographed by a man (we see her flat chest and nipples along with her bare pubic region). She soon gets up and causes trouble, and is thrown out of the room by the man (we see her flat chest and nipples throughout, as well as her bare buttocks at great length; full screen version - during the shot where she sits up on the daybed, we accidentally see a glimpse of white panties no doubt for modesty sake during filming; when she is causing trouble, she is wearing a very thin skin colored thong).

We see a naked man and woman sleeping on a bed, and Violet tickles the woman's face (though the woman is covered up, we briefly see the woman's breasts during the commotion of her waking up; we see no nudity from the man).

A woman sitting on a couch exposes her breasts for a man to photograph her while Violet is sitting near her the entire time (we see the woman's bare breasts at great length).
