The Mysterious Case of Ms. V. is based on Virginia Woolf's short story The Mysterious Case of Miss V. and muses on the subject of those people that we see year-after-year at events but don't really know. For years, Ms. V. attends some of the same social functions that the narrator attends. They know each other and make brief passing conversation but never attempt to talk at length. Ms. V. is described as bland as she often seems to "melt into some armchair or chest of drawers." In thinking about Ms. V., our narrator begins to wonder if she herself is bland. When Ms. V. eventually stops attending events, the narrator is aware that something is not quite right. Has a picture been moved? After some time passes, the narrator realizes she hasn't seen Ms. V in months and sets out on a quest to find Ms. V.
