Before the turn of the century, as tribes and bribes became history, a Native Chinook Indian named TUM is forced to join the U.S. Lifesaving Service in the treacherous waters of the Pacific Northwest to save his people from being sent to reservations. The US government plans to build a lifesaving station on the coast, forcing the Chinook off their land. TUM and a few elite Chinook must enlist in the USLSS or be sent to the Rio Grande reservation. The stations first Keeper, a decorated captain named Jeremiah Johnson, is ordered to train and welcome the Chinook to the tight seven-man crew, despite his own painful past with native tribes. As Johnson prepares the new crew for their biggest mission yet, he must navigate the challenge of keeping his family together and his daughter away from TUM, the newest member of the USLSS.
