The Kalinago, named Caribs by Europeans, are the indigenous people of Dominica, a small island nation in the Eastern Caribbean. They are the only tribe to have a reservation and the only tribe as a community in the entire Caribbean. Like many tribes who have fought against assimilation, annihilation of their traditions, governments and social structures, the Kalinago are trying to recover their history. Traditional laws exist for indigenous people within a world of a dominant legal system. Connections with the environment for indigenous people, here, the Kalinago, is a form of law.
