After being "dishonourably discharged" from the Israeli Army, Laura returns to Toronto, where she struggles to reintegrate with her community, her family, and her life. War has slipped an emotional straight jacket over Laura, and her new way of thinking jeopardizes Laura's most sacred relationship and connection - the bond with her niece, Kate. Returning home, Laura receives zero empathy from her family, particularly from her mother, Judy, who exacerbates the shame she feels surrounding Laura's "dishonourable discharge". Judy's judgment and secrecy deepens the suffering Laura feels about not being a "good" Jew.
