Tony Alto is a young criminal who has been sentenced to prison for stealing cars and selling them on the black market. His cellmate turns out to be a smooth con man, an older career criminal whose stock-in-trade is shoplifting, which, the older man explains forcefully and calmly, is not only a safer way to make a dishonest dollar, but a much speedier and more lucrative means as well. The older man details the benefits and intricacies of his craft while offering examples of those techniques, with scenes shown of shoplifters sometimes, all too often and successfully, outwitting unsuspecting salespeople using deception, diversion and sleight of hand. The film ends with Tony convinced that this is a new avenue of crime he should pursue upon his release from prison. The message to people working in retail outlets around the country is clear: beware.
