The Test (2003)

A young, Black man with serious intellectual disability is on Death Row and is told he has to take a test. His warm-hearted reading tutor, an older, Black man on Death Row, tries desperately to make him understand that -- despite having been shamed all his life for failing tests -- this is one test he should try not to pass, because if he fails, it might save his life.
