Drug use is a major element in this film, although it is not remotely graphic. Most of the conflict and terrible events in this film are caused by the chaotic nature of marijuana use. The use of this drug, which is exclusive, is usually brief and not graphic but is frequently discussed and shown in a bag.

The film is very intense and dark (therefor the name) and several scenes throughout are very upsetting. There is violence against teen characters presented realistically (but not super graphically) and can be very disturbing to watch. The final scene of the film depicts two innocent girls maimed, one of them fatally, followed by a brutal and bloody fight.
