The Pulitzer prize winning reporter Jackson and his researcher, Stefan, find the story of Hannah as they investigate the Swiss scandal of Verdingkinder - children auctioned into forced labour on Swiss farms. As a young girl, Hannah was one of the "Verdingkinder". She is now in a Swiss prison convicted of the brutal murders of the farmer Josef and his Hans-Peter. As the story unfolds, Jackson and Stefan follow the trail of evidence about what truly happened to the heart of the Swiss establishment. In doing so they throw Hannah's peaceful life into turmoil. The consequence of Hannah's story being televised s the re-appearance of Hannah's father, Franz. With his arrival Franz the secret Hannah has concealed her entire adult life is revealed. After Hannah is released and pardoned, Stefan has one, final, shocking, revelation.
