It all started 20 years ago in San Francisco when, after a bad break-up with a girlfriend, Larry Harvey spontaneously decided to go to the beach and burn a 20-metre effigy of a man. He invited some friends to watch; they all had great fun and decided to repeat the event the next year. They never thought that 20 years later, this greatest artistic event in the United States would draw a crowd of over 35,000. Participants in this neo-pagan ritual include business people and students, computer programmers and former hippies, with boundaries of age and wealth completely obliterated. Radical self-expression and taking part in creating reality are the most important elements of this festival of modern art that includes elements of Woodstock, Bacchanalia, and narcotic dreams.
