World War I. Against the backdrop of the deceptively quiet Macedonian mountains, a small unit of Greek infantry soldiers has holed up in a long, deep trench to shelter from enemy fire. But, while grappling with hunger, shell shock, and the constant stress of non-stop bombardment, a corporal and three of his men climb over the top edge into the no man's land during a ceasefire to scavenge for timber.
