In 1716, The russian army began to siege Kajaani castle, the last free fort in the finnish region of that time. Only a handful of the castle's worn-out inhabitants defended the castle against the russian army of thousands. The enemy attacks were blocked time and again by the gallant defence. Finally, the frustrated russian troops started a massive attack that sealed the castle's fate. Kainu is a short film made in the province of Kainuu. It features the last moments of Kajaani castle, the most central attraction in Kainuu's cultural history. This film has been made to honour the existence of the castle throughout the centuries.
