The figure of Padre Pio attracted huge crowds to San Giovanni Rotondo. Among them was also a student of the Angelicum University in Rome - Fr. Karol Wojtyla. This student who later became Pope canonized Padre Pio on June 16, 2002. Padre Pio became famous for his stigmas.
