In the 1950s, jet engines pushed flight into the vast reaches of the upper atmosphere - but the problems were many and no one knew if a pilot could survive emergencies at these extreme altitudes. This is the story of high-altitude escape systems, and the human tests necessary to develop them, culminating in the incredible 14-mile drop that saw a man fly through the sound barrier with just a thermal suit and a parachute.
