Birdy walks in on her parents having sex, nothing much seen, just her father springing up in alarm from the bed.

There are several allusions to sex, such as Birdy trying to find out what being a virgin means, or one of her suitors telling her that he looks forward to their "carnal" experiences.

Birdy is punished by being hit hard on her palm by a stick by her father every time she scares off a suitor. We see him hitting her and the bruises on her palms.
